First Half Markets Explained: 1H 1X2, Over/Under, BTTS, Double Chance

First half markets settle on the score at the end of 45 minutes (plus first-half stoppage time). The second half is irrelevant — if you back Over 1.5 first half goals, the match only needs to produce 2 goals before the break for your selection to win, regardless of what happens after.

1H 1X2 (First Half Match Result)

The same structure as a full-time 1X2, applied to the first half score only.

  • 1H 1 — home team leads at half-time
  • 1H X — the score is level at half-time
  • 1H 2 — away team leads at half-time

Example: Arsenal vs Chelsea. The score at half-time is 1-0 to Arsenal, but Chelsea come back to win 1-2 in the second half. The full-time result is 1-2 (away win), but the 1H 1X2 is settled at half-time: Arsenal were leading, so 1H 1 wins.

1H Over/Under (First Half Total Goals)

Predicts whether total goals in the first half will be over or under a set line. Lines are typically lower than full-time lines because only 45 minutes are in play.

Common 1H lines: 0.5, 1.5, 2.5.

Example: A match with a line of 1H Over/Under 0.5.

  • A 1-0 first half score (1 goal) → 1H Over 0.5 wins
  • A 0-0 first half score (0 goals) → 1H Under 0.5 wins

1H BTTS (First Half Both Teams to Score)

Both teams must score at least one goal before half-time. The second half is not counted.

  • 1H BTTS Yes — both teams have scored at least once by the 45-minute mark
  • 1H BTTS No — at least one team has not scored by half-time

Example: The score at half-time is 1-1.

  • Arsenal scored (1 goal). Chelsea scored (1 goal).
  • Both teams scored in the first half — 1H BTTS Yes wins.

If Arsenal lead 2-0 at half-time, Chelsea did not score — 1H BTTS No wins, regardless of what Chelsea do in the second half.

For the full-time BTTS market, see Both Teams to Score Explained.

First Half Double Chance

Combines two of the three 1H 1X2 outcomes into a single selection:

  • 1H 1X — home team leads or the score is level at half-time (home team does not trail)
  • 1H X2 — score is level or away team leads at half-time (away team does not trail)
  • 1H 12 — either team leads at half-time (the first half does not end level)

Example: Half-time score is 0-0.

  • 1H 1X: includes X (level) — wins
  • 1H X2: includes X (level) — wins
  • 1H 12: requires one team to lead — loses

For the full-time Double Chance market, see Double Chance Betting Explained.

Second Half Markets

Many bookmakers also offer second-half-only markets, which settle on the goals scored in the second half (i.e. the final score minus the half-time score). The same market types apply: 2H 1X2, 2H Over/Under, 2H BTTS.

Example: A match ends 3-1. At half-time it was 1-0. The second-half score is therefore 2-1.

  • 2H Over/Under 1.5: 2+1 = 3 second-half goals — 2H Over 1.5 wins
  • 2H 1X2: home team scored 2, away team scored 1 in the second half — 2H 1 (home team leads) wins
