FPL's own rules handle the scoring. What causes friction in a private league is everything around the scoring: whether late joiners count from GW1, what happens when someone abandons their team, who breaks a tie, and what the winner actually gets.
A short written agreement, pinned in the group chat before GW1, prevents nearly all of it. Here is one ready to copy.
Copy-paste rules block
Fill in the items in square brackets, then post it in your group chat and pin it.
[LEAGUE NAME] — FPL 2026/27 House Rules
ENTRY
Free. No payment required to participate.
START GAMEWEEK
This league counts points from GW[X] onward. Points scored in earlier
Gameweeks do not appear in this league's table.
LATE JOINERS
Welcome at any time. Your points count from GW[X] onward. Gameweeks
before the start Gameweek are not included, regardless of join date.
INACTIVE TEAMS
A manager with no transfers, captain changes, or lineup changes for
four consecutive Gameweeks is considered inactive. Results involving
inactive teams stand on the table. Inactive managers are excluded from
end-of-season recognition.
CHIP DISCLOSURE
No obligation to announce chips in advance.
TIEBREAKS (CLASSIC)
1. Most Gameweek wins (most times finishing top half of the table)
2. Fewest transfer-point deductions across the season
3. Highest single Gameweek score
TIEBREAKS (HEAD-TO-HEAD)
If managers are level on H2H points at the end of the season:
1. Total Gameweek points
2. Highest single Gameweek score
MONTHLY RECOGNITION
[Optional — e.g. highest GW score each month gets a shoutout or a
small non-cash token. Fill in or remove this clause.]
SEASON PRIZES
Non-cash only. Suggested: [trophy / printed certificate / loser buys
suya at the end-of-season meetup / winner picks the next group venue].
DISPUTES
[Admin name] makes the final call on any dispute. Decisions are final.
AMENDMENTS
Rules do not change mid-season except by unanimous agreement, announced
before the next Gameweek deadline.
How to use this
- Fill in the blanks — league name, start Gameweek number, admin name, and the prize clause. Delete or adapt the monthly recognition clause if you are not doing that.
- Post it once before GW1. The group chat is the right place, not a separate document nobody reads.
- Pin it so it does not get buried. Most messaging apps let you pin messages at the top of a chat. If yours does not, screenshot it and pin the image.
That is all the administration you need. You do not need to refer to it unless a question comes up — and if it does, the answer is already there.
Why the no-cash clause matters
A free league among friends is a game. Once money changes hands, it becomes something else with different rules — rules about what happens if someone drops out, what happens if the admin disappears, what happens if the result is disputed. Nobody in the group chat has thought any of that through, and the FPL platform is not designed to adjudicate it.
Keeping prizes non-cash — bragging rights, a trophy, the loser buys suya, the winner's name on a pinned honours list — keeps the competition real without creating a problem nobody signed up for.
