How to Play Fantasy Premier League in Nigeria: A Complete Beginner's Guide (2026/27)

Fantasy Premier League costs nothing to enter. No subscription, no entry fee, no payment method needed. You sign up, pick 15 Premier League players within a £100.0m budget, and score points based on what they do on the pitch every Gameweek.

A lot of Nigerians assume something involving Premier League players and points must have a catch. There is no catch. Here is how to start.

Go to fantasy.premierleague.com or install the official FPL app from Google Play or the App Store. Create an account with your email address.

No VPN is needed from Nigeria — the site and app work normally. Your team name is public and moderated by the Premier League. Your favourite club selection is cosmetic; it does not restrict which players you can pick.

Build your squad

Your budget is £100.0m to fill 15 positions:

| Position | Slots | |---|---| | Goalkeeper (GK) | 2 | | Defender (DEF) | 5 | | Midfielder (MID) | 5 | | Forward (FWD) | 3 |

You cannot submit a squad that exceeds budget or leaves any slot empty. Three rules to memorise:

  • Maximum 3 players from any one club. This applies across all 15 slots, not just the starting XI.
  • Your starting XI is 11 players; the remaining 4 form a bench you order yourself.
  • Minimum starting formation: 1 GK, 3 DEF, 2 MID, 1 FWD.

Auto-substitutions during a Gameweek run top-to-bottom through your ordered bench. If you leave the bench in random order, the wrong player comes on.

How scoring works

Points come from real match events. The full 2026/27 scoring table:

| Action | Points | |---|---| | Playing up to 60 minutes | 1 | | Playing 60 minutes or more (excluding stoppage time) | 2 | | Goal scored by a goalkeeper | 10 | | Goal scored by a defender | 6 | | Goal scored by a midfielder | 5 | | Goal scored by a forward | 4 | | Assist | 3 | | Clean sheet (goalkeeper or defender) | 4 | | Clean sheet (midfielder) | 1 | | Every 3 shots saved by a goalkeeper | 1 | | Penalty save | 5 | | 10 defensive contributions by a defender | 2 | | 12 defensive contributions by a midfielder | 2 | | 12 defensive contributions by a forward | 2 | | Bonus points (best players in a match) | 1–3 | | Penalty miss | −2 | | Every 2 goals conceded (goalkeeper or defender) | −1 | | Yellow card | −1 | | Red card | −3 | | Own goal | −2 |

Your captain scores double points that Gameweek. Your vice-captain only inherits the armband if the captain does not play at all — not if they play badly. Pick both every week.

For the full detail on defensive contributions, the bonus points system, and the 2026/27 scoring lockdown at 09:00 UK time, see How FPL Points Work.

The deadline

Every Gameweek has a deadline 90 minutes before its first kick-off. Once it passes, all choices lock: transfers, captain, vice-captain, bench order, and any chip selected.

GW1 2026/27 deadline: Friday 21 August 2026, 18:30 WAT. The UK is on BST (UTC+1) in August, and Nigeria is also UTC+1, so no conversion needed for summer deadlines. After the UK clocks go back on Sunday 25 October 2026, Nigeria is one hour ahead — a 13:30 UK deadline becomes 14:30 WAT.

The app's countdown shows your device's local time, so a phone set to Lagos already shows WAT. Trust the countdown over any article listing a UK time.

See FPL Deadline Time in Nigeria for the full conversion table and the specific dates worth saving.

Transfers

Before the GW1 deadline: unlimited free transfers. Build and tweak freely.

From GW1 onward:

  • 1 free transfer per Gameweek. Unused ones roll over up to a maximum of 5 banked.
  • Every extra transfer beyond your free allowance costs −4 points that Gameweek.

There are no extra December free transfers in 2026/27 — the AFCON allowance in a prior season was specific to that window.

See How FPL Transfers Work and How FPL Price Changes Work.

Chips

You receive 8 chips across the season — two identical sets of four:

| Chip | What it does | |---|---| | Wildcard | Unlimited permanent transfers for that Gameweek, including ones already made | | Free Hit | Unlimited transfers for one Gameweek only; squad reverts at the next deadline | | Triple Captain | Captain's points ×3 instead of ×2 | | Bench Boost | Bench players' points count toward your total |

One chip per Gameweek maximum. The first set expires at the GW19 deadline: Saturday 2 January 2027, 14:30 WAT. Unused chips from set one are lost, not carried over.

See FPL Chips Explained for restrictions on when each chip can and cannot be played.

Mini-leagues

Playing against millions of managers worldwide makes your global rank an abstract number. A mini-league — even eight people from your office — gives you a real season-long competition that actually means something.

Mini-leagues are free to enter. You create one inside the app, choose a format, and share an invite code. Prizes should be non-cash: a trophy, bragging rights, the loser hosts the Jollof party. Running a cash-entry pool is a different arrangement entirely and not what the FPL platform is designed for.

Playing on Nigerian data

FPL itself uses very little data — setting transfers and checking a league table are text operations. What drains a data plan is the habit around it: leaving the live points page open across a nine-hour matchday, or watching a 12-minute YouTube preview before the deadline.

See How to Play FPL on a Small Data Plan for specific habits and what to do when the site will not load.

Five first-season mistakes

  1. Missing the deadline over the UK/Nigeria time gap. After 25 October 2026, the UK deadline is one hour behind WAT. Use the in-app countdown, which shows your device's local time.
  2. A vice-captain who does not play. If both captain and vice-captain sit out, the armband passes to your first-eligible auto-sub. Always keep a playing vice-captain.
  3. An unordered bench. Auto-subs run top-to-bottom through your bench list. Set the order every Gameweek, not just at the start of the season.
  4. Taking −4 transfers out of habit. An extra transfer has to return more than 4 additional points to be worthwhile. Most weeks, rolling the free transfer is the better move.
  5. Spending the full budget on starters. Leaving minimum-cost fillers across all four bench slots means auto-subs bring in unusable options. Keep a small budget buffer.
