Winning Margin Betting Explained: Home by 1, by 2, by 3+ and More

Winning Margin combines two pieces of information into one selection: who wins the match, and by how many goals. Rather than simply picking a team to win, you predict the exact margin of victory — or select the draw band if you expect the match to end level. All possible match outcomes are covered by the available bands.

What is Winning Margin in betting?

Winning Margin is a market that asks you to predict both the match result and the goal difference at full time. It differs from a standard 1X2 because predicting the correct winner is not enough on its own — you also need the margin to fall within your selected band.

The market also includes a draw band: if the match ends level (at any score), the draw selection wins regardless of the actual scoreline. A 0-0 draw and a 3-3 draw both settle in the same draw band.

How winning margin bands work

Common bands offered across bookmakers:

  • Home Win by 1
  • Home Win by 2
  • Home Win by 3+
  • Draw (any score)
  • Away Win by 1
  • Away Win by 2
  • Away Win by 3+

Some bookmakers extend the home and away bands further (Home Win by 4+, Home Win by 5+, etc.), particularly for matches with large expected goal differences. You select one band — only that specific band wins.

Worked examples — home win bands

Match ends 1-0 (home win by 1): Home Win by 1 wins. Home Win by 2 loses. All away bands lose.

Match ends 3-1 (home win by 2): Home Win by 2 wins. Home Win by 1 loses. Home Win by 3+ loses.

Match ends 4-0 (home win by 4): Home Win by 3+ wins (assuming 3+ is the highest available band). If the bookmaker also lists "Home Win by 4+" as a separate band, that specific band wins instead.

Match ends 5-2 (home win by 3): Home Win by 3+ wins.

Worked examples — draw band

Match ends 0-0: Draw wins. Match ends 2-2: Draw wins. Match ends 1-1: Draw wins.

Any draw result — regardless of the exact scoreline — settles in the draw band. The specific goals scored in the draw are irrelevant to this market.

Worked examples — away win bands

Match ends 0-2 (away win by 2): Away Win by 2 wins.

Match ends 1-4 (away win by 3): Away Win by 3+ wins.

Match ends 0-1 (away win by 1): Away Win by 1 wins.

Match ends 2-5 (away win by 3): Away Win by 3+ wins.

How winning margin odds work

Winning by a larger margin is a less probable outcome, so odds increase as the margin grows. For the same match, "Home Win by 1" carries lower odds than "Home Win by 3+" because a narrow victory is more likely than a heavy one. The draw band odds depend on how likely a draw is for that specific match.

Winning Margin vs Correct Score

Both markets require you to form a view on the scoreline direction, but they differ in precision:

Correct Score requires the exact final scoreline — 2-1, 3-0, 1-1, etc. One specific result wins.

Winning Margin groups multiple scores into one band. "Home Win by 2" covers 2-0, 3-1, 4-2, 5-3, and any other home win by exactly two goals. Because more outcomes fall within a single band, Winning Margin odds are lower than the equivalent Correct Score odds.

Frequently asked questions

If the match ends 2-2 and I picked "Home Win by any", do I win? No. A draw is its own separate band. "Home Win by any" is not a standard market — you must select a specific home win margin band. For a 2-2 result to win, you must have selected the Draw band.

What is the highest margin band? This varies by bookmaker. Most offer up to "Home/Away Win by 3+" as the top band, treating any win by three or more goals as a single outcome. Some bookmakers with more detailed markets extend to 4+ or 5+ for certain fixtures. Check the available bands when placing.

Does extra time count? No. Winning Margin settles on the 90-minute result only. Goals scored in extra time do not affect the Winning Margin settlement. If the match is level after 90 minutes and goes to extra time in a cup competition, the Winning Margin market settles as a draw (the draw band).
