Bet9ja's Bet Builder lets you combine player and team statistics into a single bet. But whether a moment in the match actually counts toward your selection depends on Bet9ja's own definitions — which are not always the same as the broadcast commentary you hear. This page explains each stat category in plain English.
How are "shots" defined?
A shot is any intentional, clear attempt at goal. This includes:
- Shots on target (saved or resulting in a goal)
- Shots off target (wide or over the bar)
- Shots that are blocked by a defender or outfield player before reaching the keeper
An unintentional deflection that ends up heading toward goal does not necessarily count as a shot by the player who last touched it. The key word is "intentional" — the stat records deliberate attempts at goal.
What counts as a "shot on target"?
Under Bet9ja's published definitions, a shot is on target if it meets any of these conditions:
- It results in a goal
- It is saved by the goalkeeper (a clear attempt that the keeper had to stop)
- It is blocked by the last outfield player who would otherwise have let it in (a last-man block)
- The keeper pushes the ball onto the frame (post or crossbar) and it does not result in a goal — this still counts as on target
What counts as a shot "off target"?
A shot is off target if it goes wide or over the bar. Crucially, if a keeper or defender diverts the ball to prevent it from going wide or over — even by punching it away — the original shot can still be recorded as off target if the trajectory was going wide or over before the intervention.
A shot that hits the woodwork without going in is recorded as off target (not on target and not a goal).
How is a "tackle" defined?
A tackle in Bet9ja's Bet Builder is specifically a ground challenge where a player wins the ball from an opponent who is in clear possession.
Two important exclusions:
- Interceptions (cutting off a pass before it reaches the intended player) do not count as tackles.
- Fouls do not count as tackles, even if the fouled player was in possession.
A player can commit a foul in a challenge and that will register as zero tackles, not one.
What counts as an "assist"?
An assist is credited for the final touch before a goal is scored. There are four situations where no assist is awarded:
- Own goals — no assist is credited for the player whose touch led to an own goal.
- Penalties — no assist is credited for the foul that won the penalty, or the play that led to it.
- Direct free kicks — no assist is credited for the foul that led to a direct free kick that was scored.
- Rebounds — if the ball rebounds off the goalkeeper, a defender, or the woodwork before the goal is scored, the assist is broken. The player who struck the original shot does not receive an assist for the rebound goal.
A deflected pass that is completed to a goalscorer can still count as an assist, even if a defender's touch altered the direction.
What counts as a "pass"?
Bet9ja's definition of a pass is deliberately broad. It includes:
- Corners
- Throw-ins
- Free kicks
- Kick-offs
- Goal kicks
- Goalkeeper throws
However, a free kick must be taken to count. If a player steps up to take a free kick but does not make contact — for example, due to an interruption or a last-second decision to let a teammate take it — it does not register.
