FPL itself uses almost no mobile data. Setting your transfers and checking your mini-league table are text-and-numbers operations — the kind that barely register on a data counter.
What drains a Nigerian data plan is the habit built around the game: leaving the live points page open across a nine-hour matchday, or watching a 12-minute YouTube preview before the deadline. The game costs almost nothing. The watching costs everything.
Where the data actually goes

The live points page is more data-intensive in 2026/27 than in previous seasons. Global rank, all league standings, H2H duels, and FPL Cup ties now update continuously during matches — not just at full-time. Leaving the page open is a slow tap running all afternoon.
Seven habits that cut data use
- Use the app, not the mobile browser. The app caches its interface elements; the browser re-downloads them on every visit. The app also handles a weak signal better.
- Check live scores at half-time and full-time, not constantly. With live updates running throughout each match, an open page pulls data the entire time. Two check-ins per game give you the same information at a fraction of the cost.
- Batch your session into one visit. Set transfers, check your league, review fixtures, close. Five separate two-minute visits use more data than one ten-minute session, because interface elements load each time you open the app or browser.
- Enable Chrome Data Saver (Lite mode) if you use the mobile browser. It compresses pages server-side before they reach your phone.
- Get team news from text, not video. A written injury round-up is kilobytes. A 12-minute YouTube preview is tens of megabytes. Switching from video to text for team news is the single highest-value data swap in FPL — you get the same information for roughly 1% of the cost.
- Set up over WiFi, check over data. Make all your changes and confirm they saved while you are connected to WiFi. Use your mobile data only for results and standings.
- Restrict background data for the FPL app on Android. Go to Settings → Apps → Fantasy Premier League → Mobile data → turn off Background data. This stops the app fetching updates when you are not actively using it.
When the site will not load
Ordered by likelihood:
1. It is deadline hour and the FPL servers are saturated. This is the most common cause, and it is not your network. Millions of managers worldwide are making changes in the same window. The only fix is to make your changes the night before, not in the final 20 minutes before the deadline.
2. Stale session. Sign out and sign back in. This clears a stuck authentication state and is faster than any other fix.
3. The app is holding an old cached version. Force-close the app and reopen it. If it still will not load: Settings → Apps → Fantasy Premier League → Storage → Clear cache. Do not tap Clear data — that logs you out and wipes saved preferences. Clearing the cache only removes outdated interface files and forces a fresh download on next open.
4. Weak signal causing half-finished requests. A slow connection is often worse than no connection, because each request times out mid-transfer rather than failing fast. Toggle airplane mode on and off to force a fresh network connection, then try again.
5. Your change did not actually save. Always navigate away from the page and back to confirm that a transfer, captain selection, or bench change saved. Do not assume the tap registered. The confirmation screen is the only reliable signal.
The one thing worth spending data on
Team news in the hour before the deadline. Starting lineups for early kick-offs land roughly 60–75 minutes before kick-off, and that is the window where a surprise bench decision or last-minute injury actually changes what you should do. Everything else — stats, previews, content, highlights — can wait for WiFi.
That one visit, at the right moment, is the only mobile data use in FPL that has a clear decision value attached to it.
